Obituary of Shirli Kaye Salter

"Shirli Kaye Moran Salter, 70, passed away surrounded by the love of those she held close to her heart on October 23rd, 2019 at her home in Allen, Texas.

A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Allen, TX on November 9th, 2019 at 10:00 AM with Reverend Jessica Wright of FUMC Allen officiating. A reception will follow the service.

Shirli was born in Hobart, Oklahoma to Haskell (Hack) Moran and Hazel Davis Moran on April 7th, 1949. She graduated from Chickasha High School in Chickasha, OK in 1967. In 1972 she went on to earn her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from the University of Houston, in Houston, TX.

Shirli initially worked as a counselor for Planned Parenthood in Houston. In 1983 she began parenting her children Todd and Cara full time. In 2003 she began working for Allen ISD as a substitute teacher, primarily teaching at Allen High School. That same year, Shirli began teaching a class to parents of children with learning disabilities at First United Methodist Church in Allen. This class evolved into a parent support group which she led monthly until 2016. As news of her group spread over the years, she would spend hours each week counseling and advocating for families and parents who were in crisis. She touched the lives of many throughout her years running her group.

Shirli made numerous lifelong friends throughout her career and her volunteer work. She enjoyed spending time with her family, including her beloved cats & her longtime friends. Shirli loved writing and wrote many beautiful poems throughout the years, especially to her children. Of all her roles in life, she most enjoyed being a mother to both Todd and Cara, and a “second mom” to Christina. Shirli truly had a gift for writing and for knowing what to say at the hardest of times. Shirli was selfless in her dedication to putting others before herself. She found much joy in helping others however she could and growing and cultivating in her relationship with the Lord.

Shirli is survived by her husband of 51 years, Don Salter, her son Todd, and her daughter Cara. She is Preceded in Death by her father Hack, and mother Hazel. All of which she loved dearly."
