Obituary of John Waung

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Chian Waung was born in Shanghai China on August 1, 1939 to Chee Ching (C. C.) Waung and Wai Han Lee. He grew up during a tumultuous time in China and as a child spent many years separated from his family. By his own wits, he escaped communist China and arrived in Hong Kong as a teenager. He went on to receive a degree in electrical engineering at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He moved to Dallas in 1980, where he started a family. He worked hard to make a living to provide for his family, traveling back and forth to China. He believed deeply in the American dream and in education as the great equalizer, helping many individuals achieve their aspirations to go to college and graduate school. He was a proud father, caring husband, doting grandfather, and loyal friend. He prided himself on his cooking skills and storytelling abilities. He enjoyed classical music, reading, peaceful walks on the beach, and lunch with friends. He fell ill unexpectedly and was diagnosed with a rare type of aggressive cancer one month before he died peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his wife, Rachel Rongli Zhang, daughters Maggie and Debbie Waung, sons-in-law Jeffrey Liang and Andy Benicewicz, granddaughters Elizabeth Noelle Liang and Addison Chace Benicewicz, brother James Waung and sister Linda Chan.
