As Debbie’s roommate in college, I always heard stories of Mr. Waung. He was a smart and generous man. And my friends and I thought he was handsome too, which always embarrassed Debbie . Mr. Waung was also known as “Daddy Waung.” He let us stay at his place in Destin, and even met us there and bought us all dinner, which was such a treat as poor college students. Daddy Waung will be greatly missed. Sending love and prayers to Debbie, Maggie and family.
Love, Christina Eames

Soon after moving to Plano in 1984, we met the Waung family. John came from a family of scholars, 書香世代; he was intelligent, generous and with a great sense of humor. Through out the years, we stayed in touch. Occasionally we had lunch together, not for the dim-sum but really to spend hours chatting about world affairs, our children, work experience in China, investments, … etc. It was during these gatherings that John introduced us to Destin and Joe Patti’s. Thanks John, and our whole family will always remember the fond memories. Rest in Peace.

I remember when Uncle John lived with us, when I was maybe 8 years old. How much fun we had with him. He found an injured owl and rehabilitated it in his bathroom, keeping it dark for the owl and giving it raw hamburger. I will never forget that. He also would babysit us and he was the best babysitter ever! It was crazy fun. So much so, that after he left and my parents got a new babysitter she left our house crying and quit because we were so bad. I think it was Marty who threw her coat in the fireplace (it wasn’t lit or anything). No idea why he did that actually. Wow - we were brats - but we wanted our Uncle John back. We still do.
Best uncle ever! And always looking out for us. Somehow I know he still is.
