Maryann was such a wonderful person. She touched us and made us feel so welcome the three years in Gilman middle school. Talking with her is the reason we chose Gilman. She said, “There is a place for Marcus. He will fit it in.” She gave the school a lot of its nurturing soul. She is highly regarded in this family, and we pray for your family as you miss her. She was a beautiful and wonderful person.

Madame Librarian
Maryann Wegloski – A Remembrance
Maryann was the quintessential librarian, but first and foremost, she was a passionate advocate for middle school boys, promoting a life-long love of reading as a gateway for learning about life and ourselves.
During her tenure, Maryann brought the Walter Lord Library into the 21st Century, seamlessly integrating technology into the fabric of the program. She shepherded the first coordinated LA-History research projects with an emphasis on leveraging library resources for serious academic research. Maryann established the Bagels & Books Program which invited the boys to discuss their favorite reads – all of which Maryann had already read in preparation for the unscripted conversation. She expanded the library collection and made it more accessible through innovative stacking and attractive displays.
Maryann instinctively knew what teachers and students needed to streamline research projects, and she worked closely with teachers in advance to demystify the process. Maryann instituted the Book Nook located just outside the Library, providing a showcase for student-read books to be selected without having to check them out.
Always committed to using books as a springboard for open dialogue on age-appropriate topics of interest to emerging adolescents, Maryann conceived and created an on-line platform for sharing book reviews written by students.
Maryann’s influence was felt well beyond the walls of the Walter Lord Library. Indeed, she lent her considerable intellect to a myriad of conversations that touched on virtually every aspect of middle school life. Maryann was fully engaged in the life of the school whether she was putting on make-up for the Fall Drama, chaperoning a Drop-in, recording the official score at a JV basketball game, cheering on her students at a baseball game, dressing up as Rosie the Riveter on Costume Day, or sharing insights at a faculty meeting.
In the Broadway musical, The Music Man, Harold laments:
It’s a long lost cause I can never win
For the civilized world accepts as unforgivable sin
Any talking out loud with any librarian
Such as Maryann – Madame Librarian
And yet, our Maryann, while a true librarian at heart,
was so much more.
Always eminently approachable and charming, she could engage you on any topic, with a sense of confidence and passion, that piqued your intellect and challenged your previous position. Maryann’s earnest caring and compassion made her a cherished colleague and special friend to all who knew her.
“No Talking!” may be the classic mantra of the inveterate librarian, but our Maryann made the Walter Lord Library the virtual center-piece of the Redmond Finney Middle School, and it was through Maryann’s devoted and selfless efforts that she thoughtfully fashioned a facility that earned its place as the jewel in the MS crown. For as we came to recognize through the years, Maryann was a precious jewel, and as Harold exclaimed, “We loved you madly, madly Madame Librarian, Maryann!”

As a parent at Gilman, I enjoyed every interaction I had with Maryann. I had fun volunteering for her at the library, and we became friends who met up for occasional coffees and lunches. She would always tell me about her two amazing sons, and she was a wonderful resource whenever I had questions about my boys. She was well read, intellectually curious, warm, and supportive. I am so sorry to see this sad news, and my heart goes out to the family.

Maryann was a very special person - colleague, friend and confidant. I will miss her dearly. She drew this for me before leaving Gilman. I think it reflects her - creative, stylish, classic and more. Maryann had a great spirit and loved her family. JB, Max and Missy, she is proud of you and will always be in your hearts. Elizabeth, Grace and Belle you brought great joy to her life. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Diane

Maryann had a delightful wry sense of humor, which she often directed at herself. Watching her teach of class of middle school students was watching a professional; she loved what she did and did it well. She loved her sons. She felt things deeply.

I extend my deepest sympathy to Max, JB, Missy, and their girls, all of whom Maryann loved so much. The boys were friends of the Kells children who live next door to us in Lombard and enjoyed a sucker or two from my kitchen drawer in their young years. I'm so sorry JB and Max. And also sorry for Laurie Kells who had such a deep friendship with your Mom. My prayers are with you all especially tomorrow, the day of her service. May God comfort you as only He can. So young and gone too soon, but one day.....!!!!! I send my love to you, Ruth Stiemann

Maryann , my little sister. I met Maryann when she was in 8th grade and I was a senior in high school when I starting dating Paul, her brother. She was my little sister that I never had. I have decades on memories with Maryann. We did so much with her over the years from teaching her to drive in my Vega in the Cermak Plaza, going to punk bars, having her pre-wedding at my house, bringing her on our dates, picnics with her and the boys, visiting her multiple times in Lombard, Baltimore and once in Dallas. I have many memories that I will cherish the fun times and family times we shared. Every time she came home to Chicago she stayed with us and we went out into Chicago drinking, eating at good restaurants, and touring. I loved when she stayed with us. We talked and just relaxed together. Paul and I always called her and stayed in touch with her talking about life, our children and giving each other advice. We enjoyed accompanying her showing her friends, JB, and Max Chicago taking tours and showing them bars and restaurants. Maryann was an intelligent, beautiful person. She was a great friend and a wonderful caring mother and grandmother. She is and will be greatly missed. Much love and be at peace. l will always have my little sister in my heart.

This is my favorite family picture when we were all young children. Maryann is sitting on our mom's lap. If my memory serves me correctly, we were living in Chicago when this was taken.
