I'm heartbroken to have found out just today, and here, of Mr. Winter's passing. I've made a few attempts in the past to find a way to get in touch, and tried again today only to find I was much too late.
Mr. Winter was the best teacher I ever had, hands down. He never stopped challenging his students - even those that were the top of the class, but he brought in so much joy and comedy that, combined with his masterful teaching skills, you didn't really notice that you were working so hard. Still to this day, nearly 20 years after I last sat in a classroom with him, I often talk about him with my loved ones or my brother who also loved him from his time as Mr. Winter's student. Whether it's stories of him pranking us by wafting fumes from vials of butyric acid into the room or playing a laugh-track on loop during an exam, or just stealing a joke I first heard from him - his name is known in my house and heard regularly. He made such a tremendous impact on my life, obviously academically but also on my philosophy and attitude towards life. I love him dearly, and am so everlastingly grateful for the time, attention, and care he gave to me in such a formative time.
I wish the Winter family nothing but the best, and I hope I can serve as just one more reminder of how great a man Karl was, how enormous and far-reaching his influence was, not just as an educator but in all things, and how much he will be missed by so many. I thank you for your sacrifices - I'm sure he spent so much time on school work that you and he would've rather had together, but that sacrifice enabled so many to benefit from associating with this brilliant, hilarious, man.

Mr. Winter,
You were an amazing educator! I enjoyed your chemistry class so much that I went to Texas A&M and majored in chemistry! I held on to my chemistry notebook for many years even after I graduated high school and college! I referenced my notebook from your class to help guide me in creating lesson plans as I began teaching chemistry 14 years ago! You will be missed!
Your student,
Miral Kawasmi

Mr. Winter was an inspiration to me. He was a mentor, coach, and a person who believed in me. He saw potential in me and pushed me to be the best I could be. He was my favorite teacher. He taught me more than just chemistry. Mr. Winter taught me over 20 years ago. I was class of 2000. If it weren’t for Mr. Winter, I probably wouldn’t have not gone to Texas A&M to obtain my engineering degree. I dedicate my success to him. I am a corporate executive in a $200 million company.
I am deeply saddened to find this news and this page. I was looking him up to catch up with him. Mr. Winter touched a lot of people and chose to dedicate his life to education. He could have taught at an affluent school, but he decided to teach in a disadvantaged area because he wanted to make a difference, and he did.
We belong to God, and to God, we return. Mr. Winter, you will be missed.
Your student,
Mazen Kawasmi

Mr. Winter, we had originally met during my sophomore year of high school when I took your chemistry class, and there’s no doubt that you were an amazing teacher. Not only did I enjoy your passion for chemistry, but we had many fun conversations about our Yorkies, food, and just life. Thank you for being a very memorable person in my life and other fellow students. You have made a great impact on my life, and I’m glad that I got the chance to meet and have a mentor/teacher like you. I send my condolences to your family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Karl within a month of starting work at the NRC. Upon our first conversation, he immediately made an impression as I could tell he was intelligent sharp and witty. It was always a joy helping Karl while he worked out on the Lokomat treadmill because it gave us ample time to just talk about life. Karl was never short of good stories or a firm opinion on a subject and because of this, he was easily one of my favorite patients to work around. We will miss Karl and his larger than life personality around the clinic, may he rest easy.

To the best chemistry teacher there ever was. You touched so many students’ lives and may not even know the impact you had on us. You had such a passion for chemistry and for making it enjoyable for your students. Thank you for all that you did for us and for sharing your intelligence and knowledge with anyone who walked into your classroom. You will be so dearly missed. My condolences to Kari Winter and your family.

How appropriate to plant a tree in your memory when we planted one in anticipation of Natalie's birth. I will always remember the life we shared.

I will always remember Karl sense of humor. The one that always makes me laugh was when during graduation rehearsal at Sam Houston it looked extremely chaotic. Kids weren't listening, it seemed the same question was being asked a million times, and we only had a little over an hour to get things done. Well, Karl was near me and saw how stressed I was. He came over to me. Said something to me to get my attention (I think I snapped at him.) and then he hands me a Snickers Bar because I needed a break and was probably hangry! Y'all, let me tell you, that had me laughing and helped me to refocus and not be so stressed. I always held out hope that he would be back in Sam teaching IB Chemistry!
