Raymond was born September 1, 1931, in Garden City, Missouri, to Clarence and Bessie Conrad.  He left home at 14 and went to work on a farm in Austin, Missouri.

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, as a fireman.  He served from 1948 – 1956, joining at 17 years old.
