Obituary of Jimmie Marie Powell
Jimmie Marie Powell passed away peacefully at age 82 on October 31, 2018, at her home in Lewisville, Texas with her daughters by her side. She was born at home on April 4, 1936, in Dodge City, Kansas.
Her career as a Manicurist spanned more than 60 years. She worked for many years at Petite Hair Salon in Wichita, Kansas. After moving to Dallas in 1980 she worked at such prestigious salons as Neiman Marcus, The Red Door, Georgette Klinger and Lester Melnick’s. She spent the final act of her career at Sutera Spa in Lewisvile. She took great pride in being in the beauty business. She would often strike up a conversation with strangers and compliment them on their skin, hair or nails. Even on her last days here when the nurse complimented her on her nails she replied, “Thank you, I’m in the business”.
As well as winning several awards while at The Red Door she was named a winner in The People’s Choice Award for Best Manicure in 1993. She was very creative and enjoyed sewing and drawing and won various contests she entered. Her aesthetic talents also extended to makeup and costume design making Halloween her favorite day of the year.
Jimmie is survived by her three children, Peggy Sue Flynn and her spouse Capt. Joe Rowan of Chandler, AZ, Vickie Ahrens and her spouse Dr. Craig A. Ahrens of Flower Mound, TX, and David King and his spouse Deidra King of Spring TX, as well as 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many colleagues “in the business” and the many friends she made over the years. She was preceded in death by her parents James T. and Bessie Pearl Lappin, 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
