In the shimmering tapestry of life, some threads shine brighter than others, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts around them. Carol Ann Royal, affectionately known by her loved ones as Ann, was one such radiant thread. Born in Littlefield, Texas on March 2, 1939, Ann was a spirited and charismatic soul whose generosity knew no bounds and humility shone through every interaction. She was an inspiration to her family, friends, and all those who had the pleasure of her company.
Ann's life was a vibrant journey that began in Texas, wove through the golden state of California, and found a home in the heart of Dallas. Her spirit was as expansive as her journey, touching the lives of many along the way. A true Californian at heart, Ann cherished the years she spent in San Francisco, raising her children Don, Scot, and myself, Valerie, with her husband Dale Botts. As a mother, she was a beacon of love and support, her nurturing spirit a constant throughout our lives. As the adage goes, “The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.”
Ann's professional journey was equally inspiring. She was a highly skilled makeup artist for Lancome, spending her days brightening faces and spirits alike. In her role, she was more than just a makeup artist; she was a giver of confidence, a beacon of positivity, and a humble servant of beauty. She reveled in the joy of making women feel better about themselves, and in doing so, she left an imprint of her charisma on every life she touched. Ann's generosity extended beyond her professional life, as she was a member of the Survivors of Suicide group, offering support and comfort to those in need after having lost her own son, Scot, in 1996 to suicide.
As a "Mimi" and "Omie" as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren, Ann shined brightest. She loved her children fiercely, but her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Spending the night up in the middle of her king-size bed while you watched cartoons and she cooked for you was her signature Mimi move. Ann is survived by her children Valerie Lesly, Don (Roni) Shaw and her beloved grandkids Taylor (Matt) Ernst, Kaci (Joe) Bryan, Madeline Shaw, Taft Lesly, Pierce Lesly, Hayes Lesly and Max Shaw. In her memory, they will carry forward her spirit of generosity, her charismatic charm, and her unending love. She was preceded in death by her parents Teddy Roosevelt Royal and Ada Roberta Royal, her brother Gary Lee Royal, her son Teddie Scot Shaw and her granddaughter Zoe Alexandra Ann Lesly.
Ann's departure on June 28, 2023, leaves behind a void that can never be filled. However, her memory and the love she left in our hearts will keep her alive forever. As we mourn our loss, we also celebrate her life, a life that was a testament to her spirit, charisma, humility, and generosity. Let us remember Ann not with sadness, but with gratitude for the joy and love she brought into our lives. As Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Ann made us all feel loved, cherished, and special, and that is how we will remember her.
