Mason, Emory Eugene, 92, born December 5, 1930, died December 22, 2022. Beloved husband of Ann Sharpe Mason for 65 years. Devoted father of Kelly (Mark) Bukolt and Liza Loeber. Cherished Granddaddy of Craig, Tara and Amy Loeber, Taylor (Brittany) and Kenzie Bukolt. Great Granddaddy of Zoey and Hayden Bukolt. Gene was born in Asheville, NC, and raised in LaPorte, TX, by his parents Ralph Hedges Mason and Olga Shaw Mason. He left south Texas for Dallas where he completed a very successful academic career at Southern Methodist University undergraduate and Law School, making a lasting impact on the lives of many colleagues. During his SMU years, he loved spending time with his sister and brother-in-law, Gretchen and Jack Lester. It was in Dallas that Gene did a favor for a friend, serendipitously standing in for a date with Ann Sharpe. The rest is history. After serving with the Air Force OSI division, Gene returned to the task of courting Annie and building his law career. Ann and Gene began their married life in Abilene, Texas, then moved to Washington, D.C. where their first daughter, Kelly, was born. Not long thereafter, they moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which would be their home for the next twenty years. As a partner in the very successful law firm of Stassun, Kostos and Mason, Gene traveled extensively, serving clients around the globe. In 1980 Gene and Ann returned to Texas, where Gene remained for the remainder of his days on this earth. Gene is remembered by many for his intense interest and sage advice. He did nothing half-way. More than a few men who grew up in his shadow have commented that they endeavored to be just like him. He loved tennis, fast cars, boats, beautiful things, travel and good wine! But his true heart (in addition to his family) was in philanthropy. He wanted nothing more than to leave this life having made a difference for those causes in which he deeply believed. A Celebration of Life will be held in Gene’s memory on January 28, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, 1401 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Randolph College, University of the Cumberlands and The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration.
