Obituary of Fonda Johnstone
Please share a memory of Fonda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Fonda Lou Johnstone passed away on July 10, 2022, at her home in Dallas. Fonda graduated from Edcouch Elsa High School and graduated from Texas Women's University in Denton.
In 1967 Fonda was ordered to the U.S. Naval Women Officer's School at the age of 22. At the time, most women in the Navy were serving as nurses and secretaries. She came in at a time when opportunities for women were extremely limited, yet Fonda rose through the ranks to CAPT. Being an officer in the Navy at that time was quite uncommon, and her service helped pave the way for women to stand shoulder to shoulder as Sailors in the Navy.
Fonda loved her country and her time in service. Upon retirement, Fonda found her way to the classroom and was loved by her students, faculty, and staff. She had a passion for travel, technology, photography, and animals. She often combined her passions by traveling the world with her digital camera, photographing bears, giraffes, birds, and butterflies from all corners of the world.
Courageous and brave, kind and generous, and regimented yet flexible are just a few of the words to describe Fonda. She was always ready for the next adventure! Fonda was a remarkable woman and whatever she set out to do she did at full speed.
Fonda was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Johnstone, mother, Angie Johnstone, and brother, Tim Johnstone. She is survived by her niece Kristi Collier, nephew-in-law Kevin Collier, great niece Kirby Collier, sister-in-law Mel Johnstone, stepmother Ida Johnstone and countless friends she met throughout her life.
