Charles "Glen" Burton

Obituary of Charles "Glen" Burton

Charles Glen Burton was born in a farmhouse in Franklin County, TX on July 14, 1932 to Marshall and Tina Mae Burton and passed from this earthly world on April 22, 2019.  Glen’s family moved to Dallas when he was seven years old.  He loved to tell tales of his childhood growing up in early 1940’s era Dallas when he worked as a stock boy at S&D Oysters and at Neiman Marcus and, in his spare time, he and his friends would ride their bicycles or the original streetcars all over downtown.  They also laughed about being chased by residents and the police from their skinny dip in Turtle Creek.  He graduated from Crozier Tech High School in January, 1950, and proudly served in the US Army, stationed in El Paso, from 1951 to 1954.  He graduated from North Texas State College (now University of North Texas – Denton) in August, 1959.

Glen married Wanda Melton and they had two sons, Charles Mitchell and Robert Matthew.  Glen was an influential, “hands on” father.  Even though he worked long hours, he always found time for all of his boys’ activities.  He spent many weekends camping with them, too.  In February, 1984, Glen married his current wife, Shelley.

Glen had a lengthy career in the tax and accounting fields.  He retired from Texas Instruments and then founded his own business, C. Glen Burton and Associates.  Later, he joined DuCharme, MacMillan and Associates.  He retired from there and joined the firm Collis and Ryan, now known as Ryan Company.  Glen found his career niche in working in an adversarial role in the tax world.  He loved working with clients across the country and with various state tax auditors.  He forged many strong and lasting friendships with both clients and auditors.

After his final retirement, Glen loved to travel, especially to visit his grandchildren in California.  He had fond memories of visiting the Dollar Store for treats and treasures with them and especially enjoyed his road trip via historical Route 66 with them.  Glen also loved to visit his in-laws in Iowa especially in the cold and snowy months.  He loved road trips to Santa Fe, Yellowstone, Las Vegas and anywhere else the road would take him.  He always made new friends at every destination.  Glen also loved his shorter trips to visit friends at Cedar Creek, Belton, New Braunfels and Ruston, LA.

Glen served on the Board of Trustees and as President of the Rockhill Cemetery Association near Mt. Vernon, TX for several decades.  This was a small community cemetery that had been neglected and fallen into disrepair.  His father and many other extended family members were buried there.  He and others were instrumental in cleaning it up and restoring it and establishing a perpetual care fund to maintain it.  It is now listed on the Historical Registry.

Glen was also one of the original families that established the Waterview Church of Christ in Richardson and he continued to be an active member until his death.

He leaves behind Shelley, his loving wife of 35 years.  He also leaves behind his elder son, C. Mitchell Burton and his children, Callie and Chas Burton-Callegari.  He was very proud of their accomplishments as they matured and followed difficult academic paths. He also leaves behind his younger son, R. Matthew Burton and wife, Michelle and their daughter Brittany Redfield and their grandchildren, Brooklyn and Braysen.  He is also survived by his extended family and many friends both here and across the country.  Glen is preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Tina Burton, his brother M.E. Burton and his sisters, Mae Dell Pinkston and Irene Richey, and their husbands.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 17 at 2:00 P.M. at Waterview Church of Christ at 1409 North Waterview Drive in Richardson.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Robert Oglesby Foundation or to the charity of your choice.
