Aubrey C. Black, Jr. was born in Austin, Texas on August 1, 1924. He graduated from Austin High School and stayed in Austin and graduated from The University of Texas. While has was at The University, he was President of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and a Texas Cowboy.
He left The University to serve in the U. S. Marine Corp as a test pilot, flying Corsairs in World War II. This is where he earned the nickname “Ace.” Ace was a true patriot, loving God, family and country.
He returned after the war, graduated and married the Sweetheart of The University of Texas, Martha May Cartwright. They moved to Dallas and he began selling municipal bonds with Henry, Seay and Black. They had two children, Leslie and Pat. He later became an independent oil operator and was an active member of the Dallas Petroleum Club. Ace was also President of The Miss Teenage America Pageant.
Ace was active in several civic organizations. He was a board member for The University of Texas Business School and a First Vice President of The Salesmanship Club which he was a member of for over 50 years. He loved being in the country ranching, hunting and fishing with friends and family.
He has had a wonderful 35-year marriage to Jayne Hodge Black. They loved traveling together to the Channels Ranch in Montana where he was a founding member, the Eldorado Country Club in Indian Wells, California and was a member of Brook Hollow Country Club and Horseshoe Bay. His hobbies were golfing, reading and watching sporting events. He was an avid Longhorn fan.
On his 85th birthday Ace went skydiving for the first time with his grandsons Hawkins and Houston and promised to do it again on his 90th birthday if he lived that long. On his 90th birthday his daughter Leslie and son-in-law Hawkins joined Ace and the grandsons on the dive.
Ace would like to thank all of his wonderful friends who have been so kind to him, especially his godson Marshal Payne who enjoyed playing backgammon with him. Ace was crazy about his dog Izzie, whom he taught many fun tricks.
Ace is survived by daughter Leslie Golden and her husband Hawkins, son Patrick Black, two beloved grandsons, Hawkins Golden III and Houston Golden, and great-grandson, West Golden, and step-children Julie and Ken Dean, Mary Jayne and Bruce Fogerty, Ann and Michael Campbell and Bob and Mary Ann Turbeville.
