Marion Boyd Baker, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 14, 2022, just nine days following the passing of her beloved husband of 59 years, Rhodes S. Baker III. Our mother was born in Palestine, TX, on December 19, 1939, to Marion Lee Boyd and Ima Lucille Sutton Boyd (“MaMa MaMa”). She grew up across the street from her maternal grandparents and enjoyed playing outside with all of her cousins and fishing at Elkhart Lake. After graduating from Palestine High School, Marion attended SMU where she was an honor graduate, President of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and a Rotunda Beauty. Marion was active in Bible study, mahjong, sewing club, Junior League of Dallas, and Highland Park Presbyterian Church. Most of all, Marion loved her children and adored her grandchildren. Her love of children was the hallmark of her many years at Episcopal School of Dallas where she was a reading specialist and taught first grade. “Mrs. Baker” was adored by faculty, students and parents and made many lasting friendships in her time at ESD. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Marion is survived by her dear older “Sister”, Ann Boyd Royall Maffitt, her devoted children Elizabeth Baker Lawson, Katherine Baker Worsham and husband Joe, Rhodes S. Baker IV, and wife Jeny; grandchildren Ben, Harry, and Charlie Lawson, Rebecca, Joe, and Grace Worsham, Caroline, Rhodes, and Sophie Baker, and her constant companion “Bandit”. She was preceded in death by her precious granddaughter Elizabeth Anne Worsham. Affectionately known by her grandchildren “Dede”, she will be terribly missed. After a private family service, Marion’s ashes will be interred with her husband’s at the Highland Park Presbyterian Columbarium.
