I have so many memories of Stephen. What a man. . . And how he loved surprising Debbie:
He would often call our sister Wendy or me to help him get presents for Debbie, especially as his brain cancer advanced and doing so on his own became difficult. Yet years earlier, when Debbie and Stephen first got engaged, he took such delight in sneaking Sid and me from Massachusetts to Texas for a small gathering he had arranged to celebrate the occasion. So many pieces had to fall into place without Debbie knowing, and he completely pulled it off! She was so surprised!
Most of my memories of Stephen are with that unforgettable smile on his face, a memory I have of him into his very last days. That warm smile may have changed over time in appearance, but never in his heart.
Miss you, Stephen. Hope you're flying high with the eagles and riding your motorcycle in the sky.
Much love,
Diane

Stephen was always one of those neighbors that would do anything for you! One of my favorite memories is when my husband, Kevin, was trying unsuccessfully to light our burn pile on fire. Stephen came out and said do you need some help? Of course he wouldn’t take no for an answer because that is how Stephen was, always wanting to offer help. He came back with a small blow torch and lit that burn pile on fire without any difficulty. Whenever we were out cutting our lawn he would meet us with a cold drink, he was always thinking of others.
Stephen enjoyed beekeeping and was always eager to learn something new. He painted all of his beehives and decorated them with bees and hearts for Debbie.
After reading Stephen’s obituary there was so much about him that I didn’t know. He had accomplished so much and enjoyed life to the fullest!
Stephen will be greatly missed.

What can I say Old Man, to sum up all of it, Thanks for Life. It brings me solace that you and I had enough time on this world for you to meet Andrew.
Love you.

After my sister’s marriage to Stephen, I visited their home in Texas. Stephen took me to his shop, showed me the truck he had restored, the tools used. He spoke about how he had worked on automotive projects with his sons when the boys were children, this shared, time- in- shop continuing into their adulthood.
I felt then, (as I do now) how lucky Sean and Michael were to have Stephen for a father. They learned skills from him but more importantly had a dad who wanted to be a part of their lives.
He loved his sons. He loved my sister. In the final month of his life, although in cognitive and physical decline, he
selected, cut, and pasted, to create a collage of family photos. This was a man who would not give up. This was a man who kept his sons’ boyhood artwork in his tool/ black leather/car and motorcycle shop .When unable to speak or barely move he found the strength to tenderly touch my sister’s cheek.
Stephen Martinez.
This was a man.
