Obituary of Tom Hayden

Tom Hayden, 60 of Plano, TX was called from labor to reward on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at Faith Presbyterian Hospice with his wife by his side. He was the 4th of 6 children born on Saturday, May, 6, 1961 in Dallas, TX to Leotha Virginia Hayden and the late Celton Hayden.
As a member of Wheatley Church of God in Christ, Dallas Tx, Tom accepted Christ Jesus and was baptized at an early age. As a teenager, Tom joined Saintsville Church of God in Christ, Dallas, TX, where he participated in the music department as the guitar player. Tom graduated from Roosevelt High school in 1979 where he played basketball and also participated in the music program. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Performance Music from the University of Texas at Arlington. He was a member of the renowned UTA #1 Band.
Tom was united in marriage on November 2, 2002, at Friendship West Baptist Church to Joy Monique James in Dallas, TX who resides at the home. He was a beloved husband, devoted father, gifted musician, loving uncle and was dedicated to his extended family.
Early in his career, Tom was a touring musician who accompanied various artists over the years. He was the guitarist for numerous special events at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. Tom was the staff guitarist for Friendship West Baptist Church for 20 years. Tom spent many years in retail management including Mars Music, Gardenridge Stores, Frisco Family Services and Habitat for Humanity. Tom later joined Dallas Independent School District as the manager of Strategic Initiatives and External Relations.
Tom was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church of the Colony where he participated in the Men’s ministry and the Holy Bond Marriage ministry. A music purist, Tom enjoyed straight-ahead jazz and selections featuring guitar leads. He was a collector of antique guitars and cars and had an avid interest in political news. Because he possessed a heart of compassion for assisting people, he was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the Dallas Independent School District.
Tom is survived by his wife Joy Monique James Hayden, Plano, TX; sons Joshua James Hayden Plano, TX and Thomas Allen Hayden (Frisco, TX). His mother Leotha Virginia Hayden Dallas, TX, Four brothers Herbert Wayne Hayden (San Diego, CA); Timothy Hayden (Joyce) Arlington, TX; Jimmy Hayden II, Dallas, TX and Celton Hayden Jr. (Dana) Denham Springs, LA. Three Sister-in-laws, Sylvia L James Wilson, Jefferson City, MO; Fran Z. James Ramirez, (John) Queens Village, NY; Aquita B. James Riddle (Randy) Lees Summit, MO, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
Tom was proceeded in death by his Father Celton Hayden and his sister Dorothy Gail Jacobs.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Friendship Baptist Church of the Colony in the Colony, TX on Saturday, October 30 at 3pm with Rev. Gregory C. Trotter officiating.
