Winston was the first GISD principal to be hired from outside the district, and two years later I was the second. He “mentored “ me in all things Garland ISD and helped me weather my first years in a large district. He was a trusted friend to many of his colleagues and was also respected for his clear thinking and logical approach to decisions. I wish I had known that he was ill; I would have loved to see him again. I’ll never forget his kindness and his love for his teachers and students. They came first with him. He was a really good guy.

I am very sad to hear Winston passed away. He was a special principal and made his work seem easy as he executed it calmly and cheerfully. Always remember him whistling as he walked the hallways! He was an encourager and helped me believe I could be a principal, too. I appreciated his support and friendship. He did treat his staff as family and set a high bar for other principals to follow. My deepest condolences go out to his family and know I am thinking of you as you mourn, cherish and honor one who was so loved.
